Green Atlantic for Sustainable Development
Atlantic Arc Maritime Free Network Event

Marine Institute – University of Plymouth
Roland Levinsky Building May 7th 2008 (09:30am)

We would like to invite you to present an overview of your organisation for the 2008 Atlantic Arc Maritime Networking Event to be held at the University of Plymouth, UK. This event is organised by the University‟s Marine Institute in partnership with the Green Atlantic for Sustainable Development consortium, a representative of the new Interreg Atlantic Area IV transnational programme.

The Green Atlantic for Sustainable Development (GASD) is creating a European platform of expertise and action for maritime and environmental issues and is representative of the Atlantic spatial area.

GASD functions within a framework of the interregional co-operation and sustainable economic development; this is based on an innovative approach to maritime safety and security. The consortium, by way of an expert advisory board, within a few weeks of the ratification of the future European Maritime Policy (Blue Paper), brought together under the presidency of Portugal and in the presence of the authorities for the Interreg Atlantic Area programme, all the public and private sector contributors to projects concerned with maritime and sustainability issues.

The purpose of this was to provide for the „emergence of pilot projects with defining potential‟ for the 2007 – 2013 funding period. Following a process of selection at technical and political levels, many propositions have been „GASD-approved‟ and this is helping to structure an Atlantic Area competitive cluster that will be the focus of global excellence in the maritime sector.

It is intended that those attending the Atlantic Arc Networking event will benefit considerably – the proceeding will present a golden opportunity for key marine / maritime players in the South West to network with representatives of other regions and countries. There will be back to back transnational and regional presentations by organisations and information stands from where public and private sectors can exchange knowledge and contact details. Furthermore, there will be the opportunity to advance propositions relating to the Atlantic Area Interreg Programme and to gain high level advice from the Expert Advisory Panel, in particular Europe+ and the European Business & Innovation Centre Network (EBN). The GASD Atlantic Arc networking event is there to support your organisation and will demonstrate how developing networks can assist the competitiveness of the South West maritime sector.

The European Commission highlighted during 2006 that “at the heart of the knowledge economy, scientific research, technological development and innovation are key factors for growth, company competitiveness, and employment – dynamic networking which stimulates the emergence of strong autonomous partnerships between public and private sectors inclusive of SME‟s must be appreciated as a primary key for establishment of high-quality innovative practices.”
There is NO COST for attending the GASD Atlantic Arc Network Event. The intention is to extend a warm welcome to your company/organisation and to further the development of the GASD transnational Atlantic marine/maritime platform.

Kind regards
